Life after Dance: Career Transition of Professional Dancers

Joan Jeffri is Director of the Research Center for Arts and Culture and the Program in Arts Administration at Teachers College, Columbia University, New York City, USA. She is currently at work on a study of aging visual artists in New York City. She recently completed Information on Artists III in the Bay Area and Changing the Beat: A Study of the Worklife of Jazz Musicians. The author of The Emerging Arts: Management, Survival and Growth and ArtsMoney: Raising It, Saving It and Earning It, she has a particular interest in the care and survival of artists.
David Throsby is Professor of Economics at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. His research interests in the economics of arts and culture include the economic situation of individual artists, the economics of the performing arts, cultural heritage, sustainability of cultural development, and the relationships between economic and cultural policy. His most recent book is Economics and Culture (Cambridge University Press, 2001).

ABSTRACT 
This paper evaluates the findings of a coordinated inquiry, by a research team from the United States and Australia, into the career transition of professional dancers. The sample comprised dancers in ballet/classical, modern/ contemporary, indigenous/folk, commercial/show dance and “other.” Surveys were conducted in three countries – Australia, Switzerland and the United States – in order to gain insights into the challenges of career change from the viewpoint of the dancer. The paper examines the findings’ support of certain hypotheses, the researchers’ expectations and the dancers’ realities, and the differences across the three countries included in the surveys.

L’article examine les résultats d’une étude coordonnée, menée par une équipe de chercheurs des États-Unis et d’Australie, sur la réorientation de carrière des danseurs professionnels. L’échantillon comprenait notamment des danseurs de ballet/classiques, des interprètes de danse moderne/contemporaine, autochtone/folklorique et « autres ». Des sondages ont été effectués dans trois pays – Australie, Suisse et États-Unis – pour comprendre les défis que pose au danseur la réorientation de sa carrière. L’article porte sur les hypothèses confirmées par la recherche et sur les anticipations des chercheurs et les réalités des danseurs, ainsi que sur les différences entre les trois pays faisant l’objet de la recherche.

RESUMEN 
En este trabajo se analizan los resultados de una investigación coordinada que un equipo de investigadores de los Estados Unidos y Australia llevó a cabo sobre los aspectos de la transición entre carreras de los bailarines profesionales. La muestra abarcó bailarines de danza clásica/ballet, moderna/contemporánea, autóctona/folklórica, comercial/espectáculo, y “otras”. Se realizaron encuestas en tres países, Australia, Suiza y los Estados Unidos, con el fin de conocer y mejor comprender cuáles son, desde la perspectiva del bailarín, los desafíos que se plantean llegado el momento de la transición a una nueva carrera. Se examina en este trabajo la validación de determinadas hipótesis a través de los resultados obtenidos, las expectativas de los investigadores y las realidades que viven los bailarines, así como las diferencias que se constatan entre los distintos países donde se realizaron las encuestas.
