FROM THE EDITOR

In the research published on arts and culture management, governance has been a topic often overlooked. While the proposal for a Special Issue on Arts Governance edited by Ruth Rentschler and Wendy Reid was made before the Covid-19 outbreak, this is a particularly appropriate time for us to publish it. Once the pandemic reached truly global proportions, it began to have grave consequences for the activities and funding of arts organizations, bringing a need to reflect on the role of boards in relation to sustainability. While many governments intervene on a regular basis to protect arts organizations, ticket sales and sponsorships have been very hard hit by the pandemic, highlighting the need for boards to reposition their organizations for the future.

We hope that this Special Issue of IJAM will spark renewed international reflection on how arts organizations are governed so that they are prepared to face the challenges of the 21st century.
